There are many ways to exercise nowadays. Every time you turn on the television there is a new “foolproof plan” to get you in shape.  The problem with a lot of these plans is the difficulty level. For most people if an exercise plan gets too hard, their next move is probably going to be squatting to the couch.

This is why one of the best exercise plans for longevity is developing a walking program. Walking is a low impact exercise that can help ease you into a higher level of fitness and health. Another benefit is walking is easily accessible to everyone, so your excuses are limited.

There are many health benefits from walking. Walking helps to lower your LDL (bad cholesterol) while also raising your HDL (good cholesterol). It also helps to lower your blood pressure while reducing your risk or helping to manage type 2 diabetes. Also research has shown that regular brisk walking can reduce the risk of heart attack by the same amount as vigorous exercise. A regular walking program can also help to manage your weight as well as improving your overall mood. And whose mood wouldn’t improve if you could manage your weight just by adding some walking to your daily routine.

To see these benefits all you need to do is begin a routine of brisk walking. So don’t worry if you aren’t doing the latest fitness craze, just start with the one that will lead you to better health and keep you moving forward one step at a time.

The “Holy Grail” of why people exercise is to lose or maintain weight. When these goals don’t occur, people get frustrated and put their physical activity on the back burner.

What people don’t realize is how many other benefits there are from exercise. One benefit people get from exercise is mood improvement. Need to blow off steam from a stressful day? Something going on in your life that you can’t deal with? A workout at the gym or even a brisk 30-45 minute walk around your neighborhood can help. Physical activity stimulates various chemicals in the brain that leaves you feeling less stressed and happier.
Another benefit of regular exercise is it boosts energy. Regular physical activity can improve muscle strength and boost your overall endurance. So the next time you notice you are winded carrying in the groceries it might be time to increase your activity level.

Regular exercise can also help prevent health issues and diseases. If you are worried about high blood pressure or heart disease runs in your family then exercise should be in your daily routine. Being active helps to boost your HDL(high-density lipoprotein) while also decreasing the unhealthy triglycerides. This can help decrease the risk of cardiovascular diseases. There are a wide range of health problems that with regular exercise and physical activity you can prevent or manage such as Type 2 diabetes, stroke, depression, arthritis and falls.

Exercise and physical activity is a great way to improve your health and general sense of well-being. Set a goal for yourself to get at least 30 minutes of exercise a day; any exercise. If your goal is to lose weight you may need to exercise more, but don’t get frustrated if the weight doesn’t just fall off. Remember it took time to put the extra weight on and it will take time and consistency to get it off. In the meantime, take heart in the many other benefits that you are reaping through regular physical activity. So find a physical activity you enjoy to do and just do it. Whatever you do stay moving and your body will thank you for many years to come.

Congratulations to Peggy Henderson for the winning entry. Peggy receives two free training sessions at Fitness Plus and will be featured in an upcoming Fitness Plus ad in Chevy Chaser magazine, with a photo of her and her trainer, Laura Coombs.


Here is Peggy’s essay:
Last December, I visited my doctor for my annual checkup and she stated: “You are 50 pounds overweight and your blood sugar is up. It is time to put your on medicine for Type II diabetes. “I left her office feeling disgusted with myself but equally determined to do something about it. I would not take one more medicine for a self-inflicted illness!
 
Together with my husband, we decided that 2012 would be the year we finally made a commitment to gaining and maintaining good health.
 
I have been an educator for the past 25 years. I know what good teaching looks like. To be successful, I knew I would need a trainer who would be an excellent teacher. And that is exactly what Sheila found for us. She introduced us to Laura Coombs. Laura recognized immediately that I hated exercise, that I was not very good at exercise, and that I would need lots of support and encouragement to be successful. And that is exactly what she has delivered to both my husband and me.
 
When I decided to write this, I searched for a quote to explain what it is that has made Laura such an excellent teacher. Dan Rather said this about great teachers, “The dream begins, most of the time, with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes, and leads you onto the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called truth.”
 
On a weekly basis since February, Laura has tugged me, pushed me, coddled me, listened to me, encouraged me, instructed me, and, on occasion, ‘poked me with the ugly truth.’ In all that time, she has never once belittled me nor made me feel stupid or inadequate. When I complain, she ignores me; when I complain some more, she brings out her sharp wit and distracts me with good humor.

However, as I sit here some 30-plus lbs. lighter, a little bit stronger, and not on that additional medication, I would like to say that I am thankful that we had the good sense to visit Fitness Plus and hire Laura Coombs.

Looking up at her in disbelief, I stammered, “Ahhh, ohhh, kinda thought that was the last round. I’m done.” Laura arranged the ropes and the ball for another round.

Katie Dennison, personal trainer at Fitness Plus in Lexington, KYIn June of 2012 I was turning 31. I was overweight and more sedentary than I wanted to be. I felt unhealthy and took as many as 7 medications a day.

About to pay off my car, I decided that I would put that morning toward bettering myself. I met Katie Dennison in 2011 doing Team in Training, so I inquired about her personal training services.

Toward the end of the month, I came in for my first session. I liked how training and changing the way I think about food was not overwhelming, but instead it has always been encouraging. I’ve never dreaded an upcoming session with Katie.

Like most people, my time is at a premium. I’m a full-time mechanical engineer, travelling as many as 10 nights a month, and a part time master’s student. I love how I can just look at each week, pick a day or two to come in, and then get billed at the end of the month for those sessions. This has been the best way I could spend my money.

I never expected it to click so well with me. I feel wonderful. In 4 months, I’ve lost 16 lbs. I’m down to taking just 2 medications a day. It’s so easy too. My body wants me to eat cleaner and eat to fuel my more active lifestyle.

I find if I have a free evening, I’m excited to schedule another session with Katie or find a local exercise class to attend. I cannot thank Fitness Plus and Katie enough for leading me toward the healthier life I wanted and for helping me feel like I can continue this way for the rest of my life.

My Fitness Plus personal trainer is the most important factor to wellness in my life. I say this because first of all she diets and knows exactly what to eat and she is not a hypocrite: she practices what she preaches.

Amy Ball, personal trainer at Fitness Plus in Lexington, KYThe experts tell us that the older we get, the more important it is to exercise and stay active. This advice, plus my desire to improve my golf game, is why I keep coming to see Amy Ball at Fitness Plus.

Except for the time I spend in Florida, I have been scheduling weekly sessions with Amy since April 2012 — with very good results. Amy’s routines have allowed me to stay physically fit and healthy.

How exercise helps control diabetes; by Personal Trainer Chris Williams (Lexington, KY)

Chris Diabetes is a disease that occurs when a person’s body doesn’t create insulin or doesn’t process insulin properly. This causes the sugar to build up in your blood instead of moving into the cells. This can lead to serious health problems including heart disease and damage to the nerves and kidneys.

There are 2 types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 the body doesn’t produce insulin, and Type 2 the body doesn’t produce enough or the cells ignore the insulin. 90-95% of people diagnosed with diabetes have Type 2.
So why is exercise so important?  Exercise can take some glucose out of the blood to use for energy during and after exercise which can help to lower blood glucose levels. Exercise also helps to counteract the increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Increasing your physical activity is one of the most helpful things you can do for yourself especially if you have diabetes. This doesn’t mean joining a health club; you can make a big difference by adding daily routines to boost your activity level.
Everyone can take steps to protect themselves from developing Type 2 diabetes including someone who is showing signs of the disease. The benefits of 30minutes of exercise, 5days a week include:

-Increase metabolism and muscle mass which helps to burn extra calories even when you aren’t exercising.

-Increased glucose uptake
-Lower blood glucose levels which can reduce or even eliminate your need for diabetes medication.
-Improved response to insulin.
-Boost you ability to lose weight effectively and keep it off.
-Lower cholesterol and reduce blood pressure.
-Improve circulation.
-Reduce your risk for heart disease and stroke which are the leading causes of death for people with diabetes.
These are just a few of the benefits of exercise in fighting a disease such as diabetes.  For the biggest benefit do aerobic and resistance training but if you can’t do both, one is better then none. Whether you have diabetes or not, remember exercise is a lifetime commitment.
